This book highlights the differences between Key Performance Indicators and Result Indicators (RIs) Only some RIs are KPIs - those are the ones you need to monitor closely, since they cause the other indicators to have positive or negative values. The author suggests a 10/80/10 guideline that says KPIs should only be 10% of all the metrics, so that management at different levels can focus on indicators that are relevant to downstream results. It suggests ways to find and isolate these KPIs from metrics used for other purposes.
