Integrated planning

Integrated planning is the deliberate actions to shape future outcomes beyond what could otherwise be expected from spontaneous order. it's foundations include:

  • Sponsorship
  • Commitment to planning
  • Common vocabulary
  • Management and application of relevant historical info
  • Robustness of processes
  • Adequate fidelity of estimates & collection of actual performance
  • Management of risks & opportunities

Regular, frequent deadlines.

Accountability is key to efficiency, but adjusting plans (sliding dates, adding resources, or removing features) may not always be an option

Work expands to fill the available time - the more time one allocates to a task, the more time it takes to complete that task.

For an example of the challenges which this involves, consider this comparison of frequencies of natural disasters which occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. It may also remind you that it's always better to be lucky than good.
