flightThings in aviation rarely stay the same. Work is underway on the X-48B, a scaled down flying prototype of blended-wing designs that could significantly change the design of future products, if the underlying concepts are proven. Wired has a great picture of the X-48B in testing at Dryden.

Also in Wired this month, an article describes the competition underway to scramble for a tentative supersonic private jet market. Then, there's the Urban Aeronautics plan to market a flying car by 2010.

Finally, there's rocket man's new way to commute.

The future is accelerating, as Kurzweil reports. These examples may seem far out, but they demonstrate how there are always new ideas just around the corner, pushing the envelope of existing approaches.
