This section summarizes key factors in developing a successful process improvement strategy. The first step is typically to model the current state of processes at some fidelity level. This startup effort can be reduced when reuse of previous efforts can be utilized. Obviously this reuse is most feasible when there is a structure which facilitates reuse, agreements are in place to utilize standardized approaches in building such models, and a repository is maintained for common assets, and training exists to ensure that everyone uses this 'process infrastructure' as it was intended to be used. If such reuse is not possible because the structure has not been put in place, each individual group often must start from scratch and develop their own assets, which significantly increases startup costs, and compromises the ability to transfer lessons across such efforts.
